Language
As I am specifically designing a magazine based around music, it is important to put across the right language, you would expect to find on one. This uses the idea of conventions and putting across the right thing for the right audience. One of the things this will include is the main title, known as a mast head. Once I have chosen an appropriate banner headline for my magazine ( magazine name), I will make sure that it is bold, eye grabbing and appealing to the audience so that it will make them want to buy it. Without a mast head the magazine would be pretty plain and wouldn't really work well. The audience can get a lot of information from the title of the magazine and this is what I would like to achieve with mine. I will also include a photo as my main background for my front cover. This photo will be the featured artist I will have decided to write about in my double spread page and it will also be the main focus for my main cover line. To put across my genre of the magazine I will make sure my photo is specifically designed to create a more noticeable feel to it. It will determine the genre of the magazine from the way I decide to dress the models and what props I may choose to include in the photo. I will also include other photos, these may be other real life bands I have managed to grab a picture of at festivals or photos I have collected my self from scratch. I will include a majority of photos on each page. My main photo will link throughout my contents page and double spread page so I have kept the continuity of the story. This shows I have thought about what I am going to include in my magazine. I could also choose to have a sell line to create a more memorable feel to the magazine. Using a sell line could give a message to the audience as well as drawing them in. Its about connecting with your audience and I feel using a sell line is one of the many ways in which you could do this. My magazine will be at a price of £2.30 and so I will need to include a bar code. Where I choose to put this will be determined on how I choose to do my layout of my front cover.
Institution
I have decided to create my magazine for an existing publisher. Therefore the institution for my magazine is ipc media. This magazine publisher publishes the likes of NME and many others. The reason why I have chosen to design a magazine for this publisher is because even though my magazine is most similar to NME it is also slightly different as it includes more genres mixed into it. There isn't another magazine like this what ipc media publishes and so there is a gap in the market. Also the other institution of the magazine is the name and company of the magazine. As I haven't concluded on what I will name my magazine for the time being, I cannot state what mine will be. However I do know that whatever it will be, will be my personal institution on top of the publishers.
Ideology
Ideology looks at the idea of every ones beliefs and values being treated fairly and appropriately. As one of the genres for my magazine is individuality, this shows that I am allowing people to be free to be who they are and feel free to love ant kind of music. However 'indi' can be seen as one particular type and so may go against these morals and so that's why I have mixed another two genres in too. People may prefer more than one genre and so I have a given a wider range of choice. As I have chosen Retro as a genre, I am bringing a bit of the old life back into date. This suggest to me that it is nothing to be ashamed of and history is apart of the future. It also allows those of a older generation to feel apart of something once again as they may relate to this type of style from their history of music. My magazine will cover the fact of being able to express yourself how you like and act how you like, the idea of free will. I think this will allow people to relate to this magazine much more which will also increase sale prices. By the audience knowing there are no restrictions on who you can be, they will feel more eligible to buy this as they can relate to it more. It will appeal to them more.
Audience
For many music magazines the audience is usually any one that has a major interest in music. My specific audience is the teen generation / young adult as I feel this music may appeal more to them and they would be more likely to buy the magazine. Even though someone of an older age may enjoy this type of music with a passion, I feel they wouldn't really buy the magazine whereas the younger generation would because its expected of them to buy magazines with their money. Those that may be slightly older may have other things to buy that may be more important whereas teens still rely on their parents and don't have as much responsibility for them selves. I think buy having a teen band on the front of my magazine will also be specific to the audience as they will know it is aimed for them. It will appeal more to them as they may be of a similar age and therefore may want to relate them selves to them.
Representation
My representation will mostly come through on the pictures I chose to use throughout my magazine. From the ideas I have already thought about, the representation may not come across too well. This may go against some of the use of ideology but as one of my chosen genres is rock and roll, its fits perfectly. The sort of images I am hoping to collect may include props such as electric guitars, cigarettes and old cassette players. All of these things are usually connoted with rock and roll and so I hope to portray this look in my magazine. In my photos I will dress and style the models according to the genre of music, this will represent them in a way that they supposedly should feel comfortable with. I think by doing this the target audience will 'get' the overall touch of the magazine and will understand it more without dragging up negativity. Some people may find it sets a bad example towards teenagers of today but we cant dispute the fact that there are people that are similar to how my magazine will represent them. It may pull across stereotypical views of how teenagers act nowadays but that isn't what I aim to achieve. The point of it is to let people be who they are and enjoy rock and roll. I hope this will come across throughout my magazine and that is clearly targets those who particularly enjoy this type of music and theme.
